Moving was the first of my tapes to incorporate naturalistic imagery derived from sources outside the television studio. It resulted from a period spent living in the countryside in Cumbria and was inspired by the underlying forces that produce the landscape of that area. Reference is made to the elements of earth, air, fire and water and to plant and animal life. This work is longer and more formally structured than any which preceded it, with the various visual motifs being introduced at the beginning and developed through the piece. The naturalistic imagery was pre-edited to form the compositional structure, but the final work is a recording of a live performance between a musician, a dancer and myself. The initial
imagery was from monochrome sources processed through the Videokalos.
The music was formed by electronic treatment of naturalistic sounds
mixed live with some treated voice material. |
